New Open Access Repository For Anthropology!

MANAO is a new Open Access repository for anthropology sponsored by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. In Hawai’ian “mana’o” means thoughts, ideas, knowledge, or opinions—when making decisions together people in Hawai’i often ask for each other’s mana’o. The Mana’o project combines anthropology’s commitment with the ideal of ‘open access’ with open source software’s focus on free technology. The goal is to provide tools that allow scholars to better communicate with each other and with the world.

Mana’o will ‘soft-launch’ in late-November 2007 during the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Washington D.C. They are currently inviting early adopters to submit work that will be featured in this launch. At the moment they are specifically interested in:

BA Theses
MA Theses
Ph.D. Theses
Articles in peer-reviewed journals
Papers given at academic conferences
Digitized books

If you would like to deposit your work, simply email it to submissions@manaoproject.org and the staff will process it and deposit it in Mana’o. If you already have your publications online, send them the URL. Please note that they can only deposit documents that are in the public domain, documents for which you clearly hold the copyright, or documents for which the copyright owner (typically, the publisher) permits authors to deposit their work in a repository such as this.

Change in ARES course reserves log in procedure

Beginning Monday, September 10th, 2007, USC Libraries Electronic and Physical Reserves system, ARES, (http://usc.ares.atlas-sys.com) will be changing the way we authenticate users to access the system.

Users will no longer need to register for the service or remember their ARES username and password. We will be switching to LDAP authentication where the user enters the USC email ID (without the "@usc.edu") as the username and their USC email password to access the system.

There will be no changes to their current account and access. Future enhancements to this authentication are forthcoming as the university improves the process by which we authenticate users into library systems.

AAA switching from Univ of Ca Press to Wiley-Blackwell!!

August 20, 2007 (from the Chronicle)
AnthroSource Apparently Is Moving to a New Publisher
The American Anthropological Association apparently will end its publishing relationship with the University of California Press at the end of 2007. William E. Davis, the association’s executive director, confirmed widespread reports today that his group was in serious negotiations with Wiley-Blackwell.
“We are in discussions with them about the details of a contract for them to serve as our publishing partner for both our print and electronic journals,” Mr. Davis told The Chronicle. And Rebecca Simon, the California press’s associate director for journals and digital publishing, said today that the association had not renewed its contract with the press.
If the Wiley-Blackwell deal goes through, California will lose a prestigious portfolio of journals, including American Anthropologist, Cultural Anthropology, and the Medical Anthropology Quarterly, as well as AnthroSource, a major online archive of the anthropological association’s publications

Announcing a RefWorks Workshop on April 30!!

A WORKSHOP FOR FACULTY AND GRADUATE STUDENTS PRESENTED BY
THE USC LIBRARIES:

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliographic tool provided by USC Libraries to help organize references for essays, research papers, theses and dissertations. The sessions on advanced techniques will introduce RefWorks capabilities such as:

- managing folders and output styles;
- using Write and Cite to insert citations directly from your RefWorks account; and
- using RefShare to share RefWorks folders with other users.

As the workshops also will offer an interdisciplinary refresher on basic RefWorks features, such as importing and exporting records from databases and organizing references, they will be useful to new RefWorks users as well as those already familiar with the software. The presenter, RefWorks’ Karen Hinton, will draw examples from arts and humanities, the sciences, and social sciences. USC librarians also will be on hand to answer your questions.

Attend either workshop session:
April 30, 2007: 10 a.m.- Noon
Doheny Library, room 240
OR
April 30, 2007: 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Doheny Library, room 240

A complimentary gourmet lunch will be available between sessions for attendees of both. Lunch will be served at noon on April 30, also in Doheny Library’s room 240. Please RSVP to Judy Truelson at truelson@usc.edu by April 26.

AnthroSource database now compatible with RefWorks

All AnthroSource database online content platforms are now compatible with the RefWorks citation manager. RefWorks allows for the easy management of references and quick generation of bibliographies and footnotes. These tools dramatically reduce the reference management burden on scholars and researchers, decrease the chance of errors, and offer significant flexibility when making changes. Click here for more info on RefWorks.

Also, AnthroSource will be made available for archiving through LOCKSS, which ensures the long-term preservation and security for the over 40,000 articles that are a part of the premier online resource for anthropologists. LOCKSS (lots of copies keep stuff safe) is open source software that provides librarians with an easy and inexpensive way to collect, store, preserve, and provide access to their own, local copy of authorized content they purchase. Running on standard desktop hardware LOCKSS converts a personal computer into a digital preservation appliance, creating low-cost, persistent, accessible copies of e-journal content as it is published.

Doheny's Current Periodicals Have Moved!

Doheny Library's Current Periodicals Reading Room will undergo renovation beginning during the 2006-2007 holiday break. The current periodicals will move to their new, permanent home in the former Humanities Reading Room, also on Doheny's first floor.

Many of the books from the Humanities Reading Room will move to appropriate locations in Doheny's stacks and reference room, the Hoose Philosophy Library, and the Helen Topping Architecture and Fine Arts Library. Less-frequently used books will move to the Grand Avenue Library on the second floor of the Carol Little Building (CAL), 3 blocks east of campus.

Renovation of the former Current Periodicals Reading Room will continue through the beginning of the spring Semester. However, the books and periodicals affected by the move are scheduled to be accessible in their new locations at the start of classes, January 8, 2007.

HOW TO FIND RELOCATED PERIODICALS AND BOOKS:
CURRENT PERIODICALS-All titles available in the former Current Periodicals Reading Room will be available in the new location.

HUMANITIES READING ROOM BOOKS-You can find them in HOMER, the online catalog. The catalog record of any moved book will indicate its new location.

BOOKS MOVED TO THE GRAND AVENUE LIBRARY- Grand Avenue Library provides electronic paging of its holdings through HOMER. Paged materials are delivered to Doheny Library's Information Services desk, typically within 24 hours. The Grand Avenue Library is also open for walk-in access from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.
